An adult dog’s dentition consists of 42 teeth – 22 in the upper jaw and 20 in the lower jaw.

It’s important to check and care for your dog’s teeth regularly to prevent dental disease. There are various chewing bones that, according to the manufacturer, clean the teeth, but the most effective way to do this is with a special finger or dog toothbrush and toothpaste. In fact, just a little water is enough, too.

Simply put a little of the toothpaste on the fingerbrush or toothbrush and go over your dog’s teeth and gums in circular movements. Please make sure to only use dog toothpaste. Toothpaste made for humans can contain ingredients that are toxic for dogs!

Despite consistent care, a veterinarian should of course check your dog’s teeth regularly. Many small dog breeds in particular naturally have more dental problems and misalignments. The short snouts don’t provide enough space for the many teeth and the narrow spaces between the teeth tend to become clogged with bacteria and food residue. Often only professional teeth cleaning under anaesthesia can help.
